Mall Updates - Melbourne Square - August 31, 2021

 Welcome to our first post!
I have a lot of different little "series" planned, and this is one of them. Melbourne Square Mall is my local mall, decently thriving, and I've grown into a habit of trying to keep up on the closures and openings of stores there. Archives can be found at my Flickr , but future posts will go here so I can give more context. These photos come from a quiet Tuesday when I stopped in


Mr & Mrs Crab has been in the works for a little while, taking over the fairly long vacant space last occupied by TooJay's Deli. Mr & Mrs Crab is a local chain, which has really sprung up in the past few years. Frankly I'm a little concerned with how long they'll last, since their expansion doesn't seem very selective.


This space, which I believe was last "BeMe Natural", is now God's Love Apparel. I'd love to know what this storefront was originally.


Go Green CBD has opened in the former Gamestop, and Wooden Spoon is coming to the former Soaphisticated.


CocoAge Cosmetics has downgraded to "Top Beauty Cosmetics" with a simple signage swap.


Photo isn't great, but Trendz, a sort of antique-mall space, has closed (temporarily? For good?) for the time being, though the fact that the "E" in "Trendz" is missing makes me think its not likely to return. I hope it didn't fall on anyone.

 Welcome to another episode of mall updates, this time on Merritt Square Mall, the other major (but sadly more dead) mall in Brevard County Spirit Halloween is gearing up to move into Sears, which finally closed in early 2021. The light's gone out on Yankee Candle, which was unfortunately always one of the more popular stores I thought. But these days, chain stores are slowly dropping more and more every month. A new tenant! Though not exactly an A+ chain. But hey, cool socks are cool. FYE has permanently closed, as I suspected a few months ago. It's sad, but all together not surprising. It was in competition with a BAM thats next door, and FYE still has a store in Melbourne relatively nearby. Combine that with Merritt Square being fairly dead, and its more of a shock it didn't close earlier. A tenant is already lined up though; Gregg's Marketplace, a sort of antique mall-style rent-a-booth store as far as I can tell. There's one at Melbourne Square already, so I gu

Cruising Round The Avenue - Avenue Viera Updates, September 21, 2021

Welcome to the Avenue Viera, located in well, Viera! Viera is a very interesting place, to me. It's a liminal space of a city, and while most of Brevard County is pretty "new", a lot of it being built during suburban booms in the 1960s-1980s, Viera is even newer than that. Almost the entire city is a large planned community, which didn't even break ground until 1989, before which it had been an unassuming ranch. Becoming a large seat of local government only furthered this, drawing many people who are only there temporarily- you go to Viera to do jury duty, to sort out taxes, etc. But, Viera does have some stuff to keep people around, the biggest of which being the Avenue Viera, a large shopping center opening in 2004. Estate Sales, and The Final Boss of Pancakes

Estate Sale #1: Christmas Poisoning  So think back to your childhood. I'm sure you had that one family friend, or maybe even your own family, that was a bit too into Christmas. Well whoever owned this house beats them ten fold. Now here's the thing. This isn't even like a third of it. Christmas as far as the eye could see. At every turn. Village buildings, plushies, decorations. Of course, none I wanted... or at least for a decent price. I enjoy Christmas village stuff, but the actual buildings were $20 or $30, which was a bit rich for me. And of course, there were some non-Christmas finds as well! I enjoyed the graphics on this (CB?) radio box. Airbrushed-style graphics, woodgrain, silver facing... ah, good aesthetic. Our first retail-related find is this Optimus-brand cassette recorder. Optimus was a house brand of Radioshack, and was at least originally for "higher end" stuff, as far as I can tell, with Realistic for the more budget goods. Though by this point,
